Women’s basketball opens season with 73-58 win over Hiram

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's basketball started off its 2011-12 campaign with an impressive 73-58 win over North Coast Conference rival Hiram College Tuesday (Nov. 15) night inside Ban Johnson Arena. Head Coach Jill Meiring's squad is now 1-0 while the Terriers fall to 0-1. [Box Score]

“Overall we played well tonight,” said Marietta Head Coach Jill Meiring. “Our transition game was very good and we wore them out with our depth. Defensively, we need to play better.”

The Pioneers used a 23-3 run in the first five minutes of the second half to push its halftime lead of 10 points (35-25) to an insurmountable 30 points with 14:47 to go in regulation. Hiram would inch closer through the rest of the game, but the issue was never in doubt as the Pioneers wrapped up its first victory of the season by 15, 73-58.

Junior post #Aleisha Guiler (Lower Salem/Monroe Central)# led the Pioneers with a team-high 17 point and six rebounds. Freshman guard #Jessica Brogan (Cincinnati/Anderson)# scored 10 points in her debut in the navy blue and white, while fellow freshman #Heather Booth (Newport/Frontier)# also scored 10 points. Sophomore guard #Tori Dixon (Londonderry/Vinton County)# led all players with six assists to go along with five points while freshman center #Lindsay Deemer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum)# led all players with seven rebounds.

Hiram was led by Kelsey Koskinen with a game-high 27 points off the bench. Tiffany Shields added 13 points for the Terriers in the loss.

The Pioneers shot 49.2% (30-of-61) from the field, 29.4% (5-of-17) from three-point range and 61.5% (8-of-13) from the free throw line. Hiram finished the game shooting 33.9% (20-of-59) from the field, 32.3% (10-of-31) from three and 53.3% (8-of-15) from the charity stripe. The Pioneers controlled the boards out-rebounding the Terriers 46-31 but committed 25 turnovers to Hiram's 23.

The Pioneers will play in the Penn State-Behrend Tip-Off Tournament over the weekend, opening with Bethany College (W.V.) Friday (Nov. 18) night at 6 p.m. Consolation and championship games will be played on Saturday (Nov. 19) evening.
