Volleyball ends season in OAC quarterfinals

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The No. 2 seed Otterbein University swept seventh-seeded Marietta College, 3-0, in the quarterfinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference volleyball tournament Tuesday evening. The Cardinals posted set scores of 25-21, 25-15 and 25-13. [Box Score]

The Pioneers jumped out to an early lead in the first set. Marietta held leads of 10-4 and 17-14. Otterbein went on an 8-0 run to take a 22-17 lead and went to win the set, 25-21.

After a sluggish start, The Cardinal attack caught fire in the second two sets. Otterbein hit .542 in the second set and .577 in the third committing just one attack error in each of the final two sets.

Sophomore outside hitter #Paige DeVriendt (Bowling Green/Bowling Green)# had eight kills to lead the Pioneers' attack. Senior outside hitter #Alex Weissling (Dublin/Dublin Scioto)# had five kills, while sophomore middle blocker #Kathryn Hanssen# and freshman middle #Natalie Lanham (Charleston, W.Va./George Washington)# each added four.

Junior libero #Jen Braun (Chagrin Falls/Kenston)# had a team-high 11 digs. Freshman setter #Laura Mauer (Terre Haute, Ind./North)# collected 21 assists.

The Cardinals were led by junior middle hitter Ally Nagle's 14 kills and .500 attack percentage. Outside hitters Kendel Kellogg had eight kills and Annie Juenger chipped in with seven.

Freshman setter Tabatha Piper piloted the Otterbein attack with 39 assists. Defensively, sophomore Emily Caldwell notched 12 digs, while senior libero Lindsey Russell had 11.

The Pioneers finish the season with a 14-16 record. Otterbein, 26-4 overall, advances to the semifinals on Friday.
