Women's Soccer Defeated by Mount Union in Double Overtime

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team allowed an own goal in the second overtime period Saturday afternoon in a 3-2 loss to the University of Mount Union.  The Pioneers fall to 1-10-1 overall and 0-3-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Mount Union is 6-5-2, 1-2-0 OAC. [Box Score]

Marietta drew first blood just over four minutes into the match. Following a Purple Raider foul, junior defender #Holly Simms (Pickerington/North)# took a direct kick from just outside the top left corner of the 18-yard box and buried the ball in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Mount's Ashley Sams tied the match when she took a cross from Christin Handley and placed the ball in the lower right-hand corner of the net in the 13th minute.  MC answered right back two minutes later.

Senior midfielder #Cara Nuss (Dayton/Carroll)# sent a long pass into the 18-yard box where freshman forward #Stevie Reilly (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park Senior)# collected it and slipped it into the lower right corner of the net.

The Purple Raiders tied the match, 2-2, in the 33rd minute. Kylee Kolesar sent a through-ball between the Pioneer defense giving Alyssa Flitcraft a one-on-one with Marietta junior goalkeeper #Kelly Sommers (Shaker Heights/Shaker Heights)#.

Neither team scored in the second half sending the match into overtime tied, 2-2. In the first overtime period Mount Union managed three shots to Marietta's one.

Midway through the second overtime period Mount Union's Ashley Sams sent a corner kick into the 6-yard box that deflected off a Pioneer defender and into the net for the deciding goal.

For the match, Mount Union took 15 shots, nine on goal, and eight corner kicks. Marietta recorded 11 total shots, seven on goal, and three corners. Maia Favorite had five saves in net for Mount Union, while Sommers recorded six saves for the Pioneers.

Marietta is back in action on Wednesday at 4 p.m. when they host the Muskies of Muskingum University.
