Volleyball Sweeps Ohio Wesleyan

DELAWARE, Ohio – The Marietta College volleyball team made quick work of Ohio Wesleyan University Friday night sweeping the Battling Bishops, 3-0. The Pioneers won by the score of 25-21, 25-14 and 25-18. The win evens the Pioneers' record at 10-10 on the season, while Ohio Wesleyan falls to 2-17. [Box Score]

“Tonight was a great example of a team win,” said head coach Ray Costa. “We received outstanding contributions from all 15 players, and continued to build momentum as we head into the heart of conference play.”

Junior right-side hitter #Alex VanGundy (Powell/Olentangy Liberty)# led Marietta with 15 kills and four blocks. VanGundy added eight digs. Sophomore outside hitter #Paige DeVriendt (Bowling Green/Bowling Green)# recorded eight kills, while sophomore middle blocker #Kathryn Hanssen# chipped in with six kills and four blocks.

Freshman setter #Laura Mauer (Terre Haute, Ind./North)# directed the Pioneer attack with 24 assists. Junior libero #Jen Braun (Chagrin Falls/Kenston)# anchored he back row with 13 digs. Freshman defensive specialist #Brittney Merritt (Akron/Copley)# notched a pair of service aces.

The Pioneers return to Ohio Athletic Conference action on Tuesday, October 11th when they travel to New Concord for a 7 p.m. match at Muskingum University. Marietta returns home to kick-off Homecoming with an 11 a.m. match against Wilmington College on Saturday, October 15th. The Pioneers will the host Franciscan University Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
