Women's Soccer ends season with loss to 12th-ranked Ohio Northern

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Marietta College women's soccer team lost a 5-0 decision to No. 12-ranked Ohio Northern University Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers finish the season with a 1-16-1 overall record and 0-9 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Polar Bears improve to 15-1-2, 9-0 OAC. [Box Score]

Ohio Northern controlled play most of the afternoon taking 27 shots to just four for the Pioneers. The Polar Bears held a 9-1 margin in corner kicks.

Five different ONU players scored in the match. Sophomore Sami Atkinson tallied an unassisted goal in the 5th minute to open the scoring. Fellow sophomore Abbie Schauble took a cross from Kristina Klusek in the six-yard box and buried the ball into the lower left corner for a 2-0 lead at the half.

Ohio Northern scored off a pair of corner kicks early in the second period to put the game away. Sophomore Lauryn Zielinski took a corner from senior Alyssa Merrick less than five minutes into the half and beat the Marietta keeper for the goal. At the 52:21 mark, junior Tara Tokar scored off a corner from Schauble.

The Polar Bears final goal of the match came in the 67th minute. Sophomore Sara Rutherford's free kick found junior Paige Garber in the six-yard box who shot the into the left corner of the net for a 5-0 ONU lead.

Junior Erin Waehner and senior Kristen Dewees each played a half in goal for Ohio Northern. Waehner, who started and played the first half, didn't have to make a save in the match. Dewees recorded three saves in the second half.

The Pioneers split the goal keeping duties as well. Sophomores #Kaitlyn Pearse (Galena/Olentangy Orange)# got the start and had four saves. Junior #Kelly Sommers (Shaker Heights/Shaker Heights)# took over in the 53rd minute and notched six saves.

Five Marietta College seniors played their final match for the Navy Blue and White this afternoon. #Cara Nuss (Dayton/Carroll)#, #Jennifer Wilder (Ashland/Ashland)#, #Tessa Harlow (Whitehouse/Anthony Wayne)#, #Danielle Staub (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet Regional)#, and #Christina Tirpak (Galena/Olentangy)# were honored before the start of the match.
