Volleyball loses at Ohio Northern

ADA, Ohio – The Marietta College volleyball team lost its regular season finale at Ohio Northern University by the score of 3-1 Friday evening. The set scores were 25-22, 22-25, 25-21 and 27-25. [Box Score]

Marietta and Ohio Northern both end the regular season with a 14-15 overall record. The Polar Bear finish 5-4 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Pioneers are 4-5.

With the match tied one set apiece, the Polar Bears used a 6-0 run in the third set to take an 11-8 lead. The Pioneers responded to tie the score, 15-15. The back and forth set was tied for the final time at 18-all. Ohio Northern scored the next three points to go up 21-18 and went to secure the set, 25-21.

Marietta sophomore middle blocker #Kathryn Hanssen# had 13 kills and six blocks to lead the Pioneers. Junior right-side hitter #Alex VanGundy (Powell/Olentangy Liberty)# added 11 kills and three blocks, while sophomore outside hitter #Paige DeVriendt (Bowling Green/Bowling Green)# had eight kills and four blocks.

Freshman setter #Laura Mauer (Terre Haute, Ind./North)# directed the Pioneer attack with 46 assists. Defensively, junior libero #Jen Braun (Chagrin Falls/Kenston)# had a team-high 27 digs. Freshman middle blocker #Rachel Hackenberg (Canal Winchester/Franklin Heights)# chipped in with six blocks, while Mauer added 14 digs.

In the fourth set the Pioneers jumped out to an early 6-1 lead forcing Ohio Northern to call a timeout. The Polar Bears fought back to knot the set, 8-8. Nether team led by more than two points the rest of the way. Trailing 25-24, Ohio Northern scored three straight points to win the set and the match.

Polar Bear sophomore outside hitter Kristen Davidson led the match with 19 kills and 56 total attacks. Sophomore middle hitter and junior outside hitter Ellen Grenert each added 14 kills.

The Pioneers will have to wait for the outcome of tomorrow's matches to find out who their first round opponent will be in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament. Marietta will be on the road Tuesday for a 7 p.m. match.
