No. 14 Ohio Northern downs Men's Soccer

MARIETTA, Ohio – The No. 14-ranked Ohio Northern University men's soccer team defeated Marietta College by the score of 8-1 Friday afternoon. The win secures the top seed for the Polar Bears in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament next week. [Box Score]

The Pioneers finish the season 2-13-2 overall and 1-6-2 in the OAC. Ohio Northern improves to 16-2-2, 8-0-1 in the conference.

The Polar Bears scored a pair of goals just over two minutes apart to take an early lead. Senior forward Christian Huelsman, with an assist from junior midfielder Chris Matejka, tallied the first goal in the 17th minute. Matejka found the back of the net two minutes later off an assist from senior Cory Dobkins.

Marietta cut the lead in half in the 24th minute. Freshman forward #Wesley Riley (Marietta/Marietta)# dribble across the top of the 15-yard box and ripped a shot over the ONU keeper for his third goal of the season.

After Riley's goal, it was all Ohio Northern. The Polar Bears added three more goals in the first half for a 5-1 lead at the break. Junior midfielder Cameron Johnson scored twice and senior midfielder Robert Sellers notched one.

Three more second half goals, including an own goal, gave Ohio Northern the 8-1 victory. Senior defender Zach Crawford and junior Josh Green each scored in the second period.

Junior Mac Church had three saves in goal for the Polar Bears, while sophomore #Bobby Thaxton (Milford/Milford)# had seven for the Pioneers.

Ohio Northern took 22 shots, including 15 on goal, and had seven corner kicks. Marietta had six shots, four on goal, and took two corners.
