NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Marietta College volleyball team won a five-set thriller at Muskingum University Tuesday night. The set scores were 25-11, 23-25, 23-25, 25-22, and 15-10. The Pioneers up their record to 11-10 overall and 3-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Muskies fall to 11-12 and 1-4 OAC. [Box Score]

“This was our first big road win of the year, and it was hard fought,” said Marietta head coach Ray Costa. “We played a scrappy team who forced us to step up our play in multiple areas, and that's exactly what we did.”

Sophomore outside hitter #Paige DeVriendt (Bowling Green/Bowling Green)# led the Pioneers with a match-high 19 kills. She added four blocks. Middle blocker #Kathryn Hanssen# was nearly flawless registering 11 kills and no errors to go along with seven blocks. Junior #Alex VanGundy (Powell/Olentangy Liberty)# chipped in with 11 kills, 21 digs and three blocks, while senior #Meredith Storey (Olmsted Falls/Olmsted Falls)# had nine kills.

Senior #Alex Weissling (Dublin/Dublin Scioto)# was deadly from the service line hammering eight aces in the match. Weissling also had 11 digs. Junior libero #Jen Braun (Chagrin Falls/Kenston)# had a team-high 28 digs. Freshman setter #Laura Mauer (Terre Haute, Ind./North)# notched 48 assists and 25 digs. Defensive specialist #Brittney Merritt (Akron/Copley)# added 21 digs and three service aces.

The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday when they host a tri-match. Marietta plays Wilmington at 11 a.m. and Franciscan at 3 p.m. Wilmington and Franciscan square off at 1 p.m.
