MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College men's soccer put forth a solid effort for 110 minutes to start the season with a 1-1 tie against visiting Westminster (Pa.) College Saturday (Sept. 4) night under the lights of Don Drumm Stadium. [

The young Pioneers (0-0-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute. Senior defender
Ryan Wong (Granville/Granville) sent a throw-in into the box, which bounced on the turf, over the keeper's head and right to sophomore forward
Brandon Siringer (Willowick/Eastlake North). Siringer calmly finished off the play with a header into the open net.
Westminster responded just three minutes later when James Gross found a loose ball inside the six and drove it past the keeper and into the back of the net for the equalizer.
Both teams had their opportunities during the next 65 minutes but the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
Westminster held a 22-15 edge in shots and a 13-6 advantage in shots on goal.
Pioneer freshman
Chris Stollar (Marietta/Marietta) finished with 12 saves, including seven in the first half. His counterpart Mike Codita had five saves in the game.
Marietta closes out its Soccer Classic Sunday (Sept. 5) afternoon when it takes on the College of Mount St. Joseph in a match-up on Marietta Field at 3 p.m.
