Volleyball Falls Twice at Pioneer Classic

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College volleyball team suffered a pair of losses to conclude the Pioneer Classic Saturday (Sept. 25) afternoon inside Ban Johnson Arena. The Pioneers (5-12, 0-1 OAC) began the day with a 3-1 (25-27, 25-22, 25-16, 25-15) loss to Washington & Lee University and then fell 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 28-26) to Thiel College. Junior right side hitter Meredith Storey (Olmsted Falls/Olmsted Falls) led the Pioneers' attack with eight kills against the Generals. Freshman middle blocker Paige DeVriendt (Bowling Green/Bowling Green) had seven kills, junior outside hitter Alex Weissling (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) collected six kills and sophomore right side hitter Alex VanGundy (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) and freshman middle blocker Kathryn Hanssen both had five kills. Sophomore setter Dana Miller (Frazeysburg/Tri-Valley) dished out 17 assists and classmate Ally Jenkins (Twinsburg/Walsh Jesuit) had 11 assists.

Sophomore libero Jen Braun (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) anchored the defense with 14 digs, while Weissling contributed 10 digs. Hanssen added 10 total blocks, finishing with three solo blocks and seven block assists. VanGundy also added six block assists in the match.

Storey once again was the leading attacker against the Tomcats. She finished with eight kills. VanGundy added seven kills, while DeVriendt and junior outside hitter Elizabeth Robbe (Crystal Falls, Mich./Forest Park) had five kills. Both Jenkins and Miller dished out 15 assists in the game.

Braun continued to lead the back line defense with 14 digs. Robbe also contributed nine digs and Jenkins had eight digs. Hannsen had another solid performance at the net, finishing with four block assists in the loss.

Marietta returns to action Wednesday (Sept. 9) when it resumes OAC play at the University of Mount Union. The match will begin at 7 p.m.
