Volleyball Begins OAC Schedule with 3-1 Loss to John Carroll

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College volleyball opened its Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) schedule with a 3-1 loss to visiting John Carroll University at the 2010 Pioneer Classic Friday (Sept. 24) night inside Ban Johnson Arena. The Blue Streaks won 21-25, 25-20, 25-14, 25-14. [Box Score]

The Pioneers (5-10, 0-1 OAC) battled back from a seven-point deficit midway through the first set to take early control of the match 1-0. The Blue Streaks (13-4, 1-0 OAC), however, once again jumped out to big leads in each of the next three sets and did not relinquish the advantage en route to the 3-1 victory.

Junior outside hitter Alex Weissling (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) paced Marietta with 10 kills, junior right side hitter Meredith Storey (Olmsted Falls/Olmsted Falls) added nine kills, sophomore right side hitter Alex VanGundy finished with eight kills and freshman middle blockers (Powell/Olentangy Liberty)Paige DeVriendt and (Akron/Copley)Kathryn Hanssen# both had seven kills. The Pioneers' 6-2 offense produced 45 assists, including 18 from sophomore setter Dana Miller (Frazeysburg/Tri-Valley) and 15 from sophomore setter Ally Jenkins (Twinsburg/Walsh Jesuit). Junior outside hitter Liz Robbe (Crystal Falls, Mich./Forest Park) also contributed to the scoring with a match-best two service aces.

Sophomore libero Jen Braun (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) collected a team-high 25 digs, while Miller and Robbe both added 13 digs. Marietta's defense produced nine total blocks. Storey paced the play at the net with two solo blocks and four block assists, while Hanssen had five block assists.

Marietta continues its weekend Saturday (Sept. 25) when it plays host to Washington & Lee University at 11 a.m. and then Thiel College at 1 p.m. Live video will be available of both game at http://ustream.tv/Marietta-College-Athletics.
