GREENCASTLE, Ind. — The Marietta College volleyball team closed out its weekend at the DePauw Invitational with a 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-19) loss to Susquehanna University and a 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-10) loss to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Saturday (Sept. 18) afternoon.
Freshman middle blocker Kathryn Hanssen led the offense with 14 kills and the defense with five blocks. Junior right side hitter
Meredith Storey (Olmsted Falls/Olmsted Falls) and sophomore outside hitter
Alex VanGundy (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) both added six kills, while freshman middle blocker
Paige DeVriendt (Bowling Green/Bowling Green) had five kills. VanGundy also contributed nine digs and three blocks.
Sophomore setter
Ally Jenkins (Twinsburg/Walsh Jesuit) dished out 26 assists, and sophomore libero
Jen Braun (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) finished with 24 digs. In addition, freshman defensive specialist
Amber Wiley (Brunswick/Brookside) had 11 digs to go along with two service aces and sophomore setter
Dana Miller (Frazeysburg/Tri-Valley) had nine digs in the loss.
Braun made the switch to outside hitter and paced the team with six kills and eight digs against Rose-Hulman. Sophomore
Liz Robbe (Crystal Falls, Mich./Forest Park) player libero and finished with seven digs. Miller paced the squad with 10 assists, while Jenkins had seven. Hanssen, VanGundy and junior outside hitter
Alex Weissling (Dublin/Dublin Scioto) all had three total blocks in the game.
Marietta (5-9) will look to snap its four-match losing streak when its host the Pioneer Classic next weekend inside Ban Johnson Arena. The Pioneers will take on John Carroll University in an Ohio Athletic Conference match Friday (Sept. 24) night at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday (Sept. 25), they will play Washington & Lee University at 11 a.m. and Thiel College at 1 p.m.
