FROSTBURG, Md. — Marietta College volleyball capped off its weekend by splitting a pair of matches at the Frostburg State Tournament Saturday (Sept. 11) afternoon. The Pioneers began the day with a 3-1 (31-29, 25-17, 24-26, 25-23) loss to Gallaudet but bounced back to defeat Eastern Mennonite 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-19).
In match one, junior outside hitter
Elizabeth Robbe (Crystal Falls, Mich./Forest Park) stepped up for an injured teammate to lead the offense with 11 kills and two service aces. She also contributed to the defense with 17 digs. Sophomore libero
Jen Braun (Chagrin Falls/Kenston) matched Robbe with two aces while also contributing a team-best 18 digs.
Senior right side hitter
Tasha Williams (Little Hocking/Warren Local) added 10 digs, while freshman middle blocker Kathryn Hanssen collected 10 kills and six total blocks. Sophomore setter
Ally Jenkins (Twinsburg/Walsh Jesuit) also finished with 39 assists and three total blocks in the loss to Gallaudet.
Freshman middle blocker
Paige DeVriendt (Bowling Green/Bowling Green) led the offensive attack with nine kills against Eastern Mennonite. Hanssen contributed seven kills, two service and three total blocks, while sophomore outside hitter
Alex VanGundy (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) also added seven kills and Jenkins finished with 33 assists. Braun led the defense with 14 digs while adding two aces, and freshman defensive specialist
Amber Wiley (Brunswick/Brookside) had 12 digs in the victory.
Following the matches, junior right side hitter
Meredith Storey (Olmsted Falls/Olmsted Falls) was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Marietta (5-5) is back in action Friday (Sept. 17) afternoon when it takes on Carthage at 3 p.m. and host DePauw at 7 p.m.
