Texas-Dallas tops #14 Marietta 2-1

Tim Saunders went 2-for-4 against the Comets
ABILENE, Texas — The University of Texas at Dallas used a walk-off home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat #14 Marietta College 2-1 Monday (March 8) night on the campus of Hardin-Simmons University. [Box Score]

The Pioneers (2-2) out hit the Comets 7-4 and both teams made one error in the game. Marietta left eight runners on base, while Texas-Dallas stranded nine.

Texas-Dallas sent seven batters to the plate but scored just one run in the bottom of the first against sophomore right-hander Mike Mahaffey (Worthington, Bishop Watterson). Adam Hudec drove in the Comet run with a two-out single.

Mahaffey allowed just the one run on three hits in six innings. He struck out six and pitched around four walks and a pair of hit batters in the game.

Marietta tied the game in the top of the eighth. Junior Jordan Thompson (Quaker City, Buckeye Trail) led off the by reaching on a hit by pitch. Junior John Snyder (Altoona, Pa., Altoona) followed with a walk. Sophomore Kirby Becker (South Euclid, St. Ignatius) loaded the bases on a bunt single. Senior Chris Beatty (Seven Fields, Pa., Hampton) then hit into a double play, but Thompson crossed the plate on the play to make it 1-1.

Sophomore reliever Austin Blaski (Pandora, Gilboa) entered in the seventh and threw two and two-thirds of no-hit baseball, before Jacob Starnes ended the game with a walk-off home run to right to give the Comets a 2-1 victory.

Blaski (0-1) walked three and fanned two in the game.

Cameron Brown got the start for Texas-Dallas and gave up four runs in five scoreless innings. Adam Spinn earned the victory to improve to 2-0. He gave up one run on two hits over the final two innings.

Sophomore Tim Saunders (Alliance, Alliance) led Marietat's offense with two hits in four at-bats, while five other Pioneers had a hit in the loss. Starnes finished 2-for-3 to pace the Comets.

Marietta returns to the field Tuesday (March 9) when it takes on host Hardin-Simmons at 4 p.m. and then host McMurry University at 8 p.m. Fans can listen to the game on WMOA-AM 1490 and online at http://wmoa1490.com.
