Heidleberg defeats Marietta women 81-62

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College senior Whitney Swain (Belpre, Warren Local) scored a team-high 18 points and three other Pioneers reached double figures, but visiting Heidelberg University captured the 81-62 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) women's basketball victory Sunday (Feb. 7) afternoon at Ban Johnson Arena. Marietta (3-18, 1-13 OAC)  got off to a quick start by hitting a trio of three-pointers to help it take a 9-2 advantage with 15:46 to play in the half. Heidelberg (5-16, 4-10 OAC) gained the momentum with a 23-6 run over the next 6:55 and led by 10 points, 25-15, as the teams entered the final nine minutes of the period. The Pioneers battled back to within four points, 32-28, by the time they entered the locker room. 

Heidelberg built its lead back up to double digits early in the second half and led by 13 points, 47-34, with 15:44 to play in the game. Marietta cut the deficit to five points, 55-50, with 11:17 remaining on the clock. The Student Princes, however, steadily pushed the advantage to 19 points and coasted to the 81-62 victory.

Junior Mallory Hoff (New Metamoras, Frontier) finished with a double-double, scoring 14 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. In addition, freshman Chelsea Doutt (Cambridge, Buckeye Trail) scored a career-high 13 points, while sophomore Rachel Jones (Dublin, Coffman) added 12 points in the loss.

Jenny Miller paced Heidelberg with a double-double. She filled the stat sheet with a game-best 19 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists. Stacey Richard and Alyssa Esposito aided the win with 15 and 14 points, respectively.

Marietta returns to the court on Wednesday (Feb. 10) night when the Pioneers play host to Muskingum University. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
