Women's Soccer Opens OAC Play with 2-2 Tie Against Yellow Jackets

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College women's soccer battled visiting Baldwin-Wallace College to a 2-2 draw in its Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) opener Saturday (Oct. 2) afternoon at Marietta Field. [Box Score]

Marietta (2-7-2, 0-0-1 OAC) gained the early advantage with a goal in the sixth minute. Junior midfielder Danielle Staub (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet Regional) fired a shot off the keeper, which rebounded to sophomore midfielder Erin Panczyk (Twinsburg/Twinsburg), who calmly finished the tap in from one yard out.

Baldwin-Wallace (5-5-2, 0-0-1 OAC) tied the game in the 29th minute. Vickie Dreiling sent a thru ball to Heather Keller 15 yards from the goal. The pass forced Marietta's keeper to charge out of the box, and Keller bent the ball around her and into the back of the net.

The Yellow Jackets took their first lead in the 65th minute. Angie Wigton sent a one-touch pass inside the 18-yard box to Keller. Keller fired a shot that was saved by the Pioneer keeper, but the rebound came right to Bucky Gammiere, who drilled a shot into the back of the net from six yards out.

Marietta even the score for good at 2-2 in the 81st minute. Junior midfielder Cara Nuss (Dayton/Carroll) received a pass from classmate midfielder Tessa Harlow (Whitehouse/Anthony Wayne) and chipped the ball over the keeper's head from 22 yards away for the equalizer.

Baldwin-Wallace finished with a 24-16 advantage in shot, and both teams had six shots on goal. Freshman Kaitlyn Pearse (Galena/Olentangy Orange) made one save in the first half, while sophomore Kelly Sommer (Shaker Heights/Shaker Heights) worked the final 65 minutes and had three saves.

The Pioneers resume their OAC schedule Wednesday (Oct. 6) afternoon when they play host to John Carroll University at 4 p.m.
