WILMINGTON, Ohio — The Marietta College women's basketball jumped out a hot start but could not sustain the momentum, resulting in a 66-60 loss at Wilmington College Saturday (Jan. 16) afternoon. Marietta received balanced scoring as 3 of its 5 starters reached double figures. Sophomore
Rachel Jones (Dublin, Coffman) led the team with 17 points. Freshman
Heather Blair (Upper Arlington, Newark Catholic) connected on 5 three-pointers and finished with 15 points. Freshman
Aleisha Guiler (Lower Salem, Monroe Central) contributed 13 points and 11 boards to collect her seventh double-double of the season. Senior starter
Whitney Swain (Belpre, Warren Local) also pitched in with 9 points in the loss.
Kortney Kin paced Wilmington with a game-high 23 points while adding 9 rebounds. Olivia Waters also contributed 17 points in the win.
Marietta led by as many as 8 points midway through the first half and took a 34-32 advantage into the lockerroom. The Pioneers then opened the final period on a 10-2 run to increase their lead to 10 points, 44-34, with 16:11 to play in the game. Unfortunately, Marietta made just 4 of its final 26 shots from the field, allowing Wilmington to claw back and steal the victory 66-60.
The Pioneers shot 29.4% (20-of-68) for the game, including 34.8% (8-of-23) from beyond the arc. Wilmington finished at 37.7% (20-of-53) overall and 16.7% (4-of-24) from long range. The Quakers, however, out scored the Pioneers 22-12 at the free throw line and out rebounded them 45-40.
Marietta is back in action on Wednesday (Jan. 20) night when the Pioneers welcome Capital University to Ban Johnson Arena for a tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
