CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Marietta College volleyball team went 1-1 on the first day of competition at the College of Mount St. Joseph Fall Classic Saturday (Sept. 26) afternoon. The Pioneers began the day with a 3-2 (25-19, 21-25, 25-12, 18-25, 16-14) victory over Hanover College to improve their win streak to 7 matches. Marietta then fell 3-2 (19-25, 26-24, 22-25, 25-16, 15-12) to Maryville College to bring its season record to 12-4.
Sophomore outside hitter
Alex Weissling (Dublin, Dublin Scioto) led the offense with 14 kills and 4 service aces against Hanover. Freshman outside hitter
Amanda Sawicki (Mentor, Lake Catholic) added 11 kills, while freshman middle blocker
Sarah Campbell (Twinsburg, Twinsburg) had 8 kills in the match.
Defensively, senior libero
Becca Holzworth (North Olmsted, North Olmsted) finished with 18 digs, while freshman outside hitter
Jen Braun (Chagrin Falls, Kenston) collected 10 digs. In addition, freshman middle blocker
Alexa Baudo (Mentor, Mayfield) added 4 total blocks in the victory.
Weissling also paced the offensive attack against Maryville, as she finished with 14 kills. Sawicki contributed 19 kills, while Campbell added 6 kills.
Holzworth again anchored the defense with another 18-dig effort in the night cap. Weissling added to the defense with 14 digs. Campbell and Baudo both finished with 6 total blocks in the loss.
Marietta will return to action on Sunday (Sept. 27) when it wraps up its weekend at the Mount St. Joseph Fall Classic with matched against host Mount St. Joseph at 10:30 a.m. and then Bluffton University at 2:30 p.m.
