MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's soccer team continued its tough non-conference schedule with a 3-0 loss to visiting the College of Wooster Tuesday (Sept. 22) afternoon at Marietta Field. It was the fourth straight game that the Pioneers, who are playing without some key injured players, have been held off the scoreboard. [
Box Score]
Marietta (2-6-1) controlled possession for the first six minutes of the game, but a quick counter attack from Wooster (3-3-1) gave it a 1-0 advantage in the 7th minute.
Yousef Aliakbar set up teammate
Scott Buckwald with a cross into the box that Buckwald finished inside the near post for his fourth goal of the season.
Following the goal, the Pioneers continued to maintain control of the ball for most of the first half, out shooting the Fighting Scots 9-4 in the period, but entered intermission with the one-goal disadvantage.
It was another counter attack deep into the second half that gave Wooster a 2-0 lead in the 73rd minute. Aliakbar found himself with nothing but a charging Pioneer keeper in front of him and was able to get a shot off and around the obstacle for the goal, his first of the year.
Wooster extended its lead to 3-0 just minutes later when
Walker Diebolt sent a ball forward to
Karl Rutter 12 yards from the goal. Rutter bounced a shot off the far post and into the side of the net for his fifth score of the season.
The Pioneers out shot the Fighting Scots 19-11 overall, but Wooster finished with a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal and was able to convert three of those in the victory.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Andrew Shannon (Cincinnati, Mariemont) had four saves in the loss, while
Taylor Takacs made six in the win.
Marietta wraps up its non-conference schedule on Tuesday (Sept. 29) afternoon when the Pioneers play host to Hiram College in a 4 p.m. kickoff at Marietta Field.
