Marietta wins River City Volleyball Tournament with 3-0 victory over Defiance

Meredith Storey was named the MVP of the River City Tournament
MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College sophomore right side hitter Meredith Storey (Olmsted Falls, Olmsted Falls) finished with a championship match-best 16 kills to lead the Pioneers to a 3-0 victory over visiting Defiance College and claim the 2009 River City Volleyball Tournament title Saturday (Sept. 19) afternoon at Ban Johnson Arena. Marietta defeated Defiance 25-18, 25-11 and 25-23 to finish the weekend 4-0 and improve to 10-3 on the season. [Box Score]

Storey, who was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, collected a team-high 44 kills and hit 50.6% during the weekend, which saw Marietta win its home tournament for the first time since 2006.

Senior Becca Holzworth (North Olmsted, North Olmsted) was selected the Libero of the Tournament after another solid effort against the Yellow Jackets. Holzworth collected 14 digs to give her 41 for the tournament. She also finished with 3 service aces, increasing her total to 11 on the weekend and 149 in her career, which ranks fifth on Marietta's all-time list.

Freshman outsider hitter Amanda Sawicki (Mentor, Lake Catholic) joined Storey and Holzworth in earning All-Tournament Team honors. Sawicki finished with 6 kills against Defiance and had 25 in the four matches of the tournament.

Sophomore Alex Weissling (Dublin, Dublin Scioto) also played a key role in the championship victory as she finished with 14 kills and 2 service aces. Freshman setter Ally Jenkins (Twinsburg, Walsh Jesuit) continued to run a successful offense, which hit 33.7% against Defiance and 33.2% for the tournament. Jenkins has 24 assists in the final match on Saturday. Freshman outside hitter Jen Braun (Chagrin Falls, Kenston) added to the offense with 3 service aces.

Marietta will look to keep the momentum building when the Pioneers play host to Franciscan University on Wednesday (Sept. 23) night. The non-conference match-up at Ban Johnson Arena is slated for 7 p.m. Wednesday is Kids' Night. Every youth through the gate will receive a free autograph card.
