Marietta routes Ohio Valley 3-0 to open River City Volleyball Tournament

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College volleyball team made quick work of Ohio Valley University Friday (Sept. 18) afternoon, as the Pioneers opened the 2009 River City Volleyball Tournament with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-11) victory over the Fighting Scots at Ban Johnson Arena. [Box Score]

Marietta (7-3) hit 43.1% as a team against Ohio Valley (0-13) in a match that took just 58 minutes. The mark was the fourth highest hitting percentage for a three-set match in school history. The Pioneers finished with just six attacking errors in the win.

Freshman outside hitter Jen Braun (Chagrin Falls, Kenston) paced the team with 8 kills in just 12 attempts. Freshman right side hitter Alex VanGundy (Powell, Olentangy Liberty) added 7 kills, while freshman middle blocker Sarah Campbell (Twinsburg, Twinsburg) had 6 kills and junior right side hitter Tasha Williams (Little Hocking, Warren Local) and freshman outside hitter Amanda Sawicki (Mentor, Lake Catholic) both contributed 5 kills. Freshman setter Ally Jenkins (Twinsburg, Walsh Jesuit) led the way with 20 assists and VanGundy had 9 assists in the win.

The Pioneers also collected nine service aces against the Scots. Senior libero Becca Holzworth (North Olmsted, North Olmsted) had 4, which gave her 142 for her career and moved her within 4 aces of fifth place on Marietta's all-time list. Jenkins added three aces in the match.

Defensively, Braun also led the squad with 8 digs. Holzworth and freshman defensive specialist Brenna Goethel (Vincent, Warren Local) both finished with 5 digs. Campbell anchored the play at the net with four block assists, while Jenkins and freshman middle blocker Alexa Baudo (Mentor, Mayfield) both had their hands in two block assists.

Marietta will return to action at 7 p.m. when the Pioneers play host to Carlow University in their second of four matches at the River City Tournament.
