CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. — The Marietta College women's soccer team had host Thomas More College locked in a scoreless tie for the majority of Sunday (Sept 13) afternoon's non-conference game until the Saints broke through with a goal midway through the second half en route to a 1-0 victory over the Pioneers. Thomas More improved to 4-0, while Marietta fell to 2-3 on the season.
The Saints out shot the Pioneers 25-8 overall and held an 11-6 advantage in shots on goal. Thomas More also took 12 corner kicks, while Marietta had just one. Freshman goalkeeper
Kelly Sommers (Shaker Heights, Shaker Heights) made her first career start in replace of senior
Jenna Freeman (Bay Village, Bay), who sat out with an injury, and made 10 saves in the loss.
Sommers turned away every Thomas More scoring chance except one. Christy Green was able to sneak a shot past her in the 62nd minute for what turned out to be the only goal of the game.
Marietta will return to action on Sunday (Sept. 20) afternoon when they visit Christopher Newport University for a 1 p.m. match-up in Newport News, Virginia.
