Kenyon shuts out Marietta 3-0 in season opener

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's soccer team opened its 2009 season Tuesday (Sept. 1) with a 3-0 loss to visiting Kenyon College at Marietta Field. [Box Score] [Photo Gallery]

Head Coach Patrick Holguin's squad fell behind early when the Lords' Felix Hoffman beat the keeper with a shot to the far post following a cross through the box from teammate Jon Myers in the 15th minute.

Kenyon extended its lead to 2-0 in the 28th minute when Jeremiah Jemison received a thru ball from Ian Cook and fired a shot past the Pioneer keeper from just inside 18 yards away.

Marietta picked up the intensity in the second half but could not break through Kenyon's defense for a goal. The Lords, meanwhile, finished off the scoring in the 86th minute when Hoffman found the back of the net following a deflected corner kick to make the final score 3-0.

Kenyon out shot Marietta 19-4 overall and 6-2 in shots on goal. The Lords also led 6-1 in corner kicks.

Jared Kunze made two saves in the win, while Andrew Shannon (Cincinnati, Mariemont) had two in the loss.

The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday (Sept. 5) afternoon when they take on Bluffton in the 2009 Marietta Classic at 4 p.m. Maryville (Tenn.) will battle St. Vincent (Pa.) in the first game of the men's tournament at 12 p.m.
