Hoff scored a career-best 26 points in the loss

Ursuline tops Marietta women 89-82

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's basketball team fell 89-82 in a non-conference match-up with visiting NAIA Ursuline College Wednesday (Dec. 9) night despite a career-high 26-point performance from junior post Mallory Hoff (New Metamoras, Frontier). With the loss Marietta fell to 2-4 overall, while Ursuline improved to 3-8. [Box Score]

Hoff's 26-point effort paced four Pioneers scoring in double figures on the night. Hoff was also one of three Pioneers to collect a game-high 8 rebounds in the contest. Fellow freshman post Aleisha Guiler (Lower Salem, Monroe Central) scored 17 points with 8 rebounds. Both senior wing Whitney Swain (Belpre, Warren Local) and sophomore post Lizz Wilson (Ashtabula, Edgewood) chipped in with 10 points with Swain also collecting 8 boards on the night.

Brittany Nair led the Arrows with 25 points, which included going 12-of-14 (85.7%) from the free throw line. Callie Brutcher scored 20 points off the bench for Ursuline. Josie Smith added 13, while Laura Campbell chipped in with 12 points.

Leading 42-38 at the half, the Arrows opened up a 12-point lead, 73-61, with 6:50 remaining in the second half. The Pioneers went on a 13-0 run to lead 74-73 with 4:17 left to go in regulation. The two teams traded baskets over the next 3 minutes with the visiting Arrows leading 82-81 with 1:03 to play. A turnover on the next possession would end up dooming the Pioneers, as the Arrows would close out the victory 89-82.

The Pioneers shot 31-of-78 (39.7%) from the field, 5-of-25 (20.0%) from behind the arc and 15-of-19 (78.9%) from the free throw line. Ursuline shot 28-of-51 (54.9%) from the field, 2-of-8 (25.0%) from three-point range and 31-of-35 (88.6%) from the free throw line. The Pioneers out rebounded the Arrows 39-35 and won the turnover battle committing 17 to Ursuline's 15.

The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday (Dec. 12) afternoon when they resume Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play at Heidelberg. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m.
