#6 Guilford defeats Marietta 82-60 to win Shrine title

MARIETTA, Ohio — #6 Guilford College overcame a five-point halftime deficit to defeat host Marietta College 82-60 and win the 39th annual Marietta Shrine Tournament Wednesday (Dec. 30) night at Ban Johnson Arena. Grove City College defeated Ohio Wesleyan University 74-67 to capture the consolation game of the event, which was sponsored by the Marietta Shrine Club, the Holiday Inn and Dixie Sporting Goods.

The Marietta College men's basketball team gave #6 Guilford College all it could handle for 27 minutes but could not hold on 82-60 Wednesday (Dec. 30) night.

The Pioneers (4-7) led throughout most of the first half with its biggest lead at five points multiple times in the half. With the Pioneers up two, 34-32, in the waning seconds of the first half, sophomore guard Trevor Halter (Malvern, Malvern) brought the Fenton Court crowd to its feet with a three-pointer from the top of the key as time expired to give Marietta a 37-32 lead at the half. The Pioneers, however, could keep the momentum going in the second stanza, as the Quakers (10-1) used a 28-9 run over the first 10:36 of the half to take control of the game, 60-46. The Quakers then cruised down the stretch to win 82-60.

Halter led the Pioneers with 19 points, earning him a spot on the All-Tournament Team. Freshman guard Jacob Owens (Mansfield, Mansfield) added 12 points in the loss. Sophomore forward Kevin Knab (Lakewood, Lakewood) joined Halter on the All-Tournament squad while scoring six points and collecting a team-high nine rebounds.

All-Tournament selection Clay Henson led the Quakers with 23 points in the victory. Tournament MVP Tyler Sanborn recorded a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Rhett Bonner added 15 points to earn him a spot along side Henson and Sanborn on the All-Tournament Team.

For the game, Marietta finished 23-of-61 (37.7%) from the field, 9-of-27 (33.3%) from behind the arc and 5-of-7 (71.4%) from the free throw line. Guilford shot 30-of-65 (46.2%) from the field, 10-of-25 (40.0%) from three and 12-of-15 (80.0%) from the charity stripe. The Quakers held the edge in rebounding 38-37 and committed only 10 turnovers to Marietta's 13.

All-Tournament selection Andy O'Keefe scored a game-high 18 points and added 8 rebounds to lead his Grove City College squad to a 61-53 comeback victory over Ohio Wesleyan University in the consolation game of the 39th annual Marietta Shrine Tournament Wednesday (Dec. 30) evening at Ban Johnson Arena.

Grove City (6-5) trailed 26-23 at the half and 41-29 with 12:45 to play but a 14-3 run over the next 4 minutes cut the Ohio Wesleyan (2-7) lead to 1 point, 44-43. The Wolverines took their first lead of the game with just over 5 minutes to go and then extended the advantage the rest of the way en route to the 8-point win.

O'Keefe, who finished 7-of-8 from the floor, received assistance from Luke Tomaselli with 12 points and Brett Matson with 8 points.

Andy Winters paced Ohio Wesleyan with 14 points. In addition, Tim Brady contributed 13 points and Pat Pellerite finished with 8 points and a game-best 11 boards.
