TIFFIN, Ohio — Turnovers plagued Marietta College Saturday (Dec. 12) afternoon in its 77-71 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) women's basketball loss at Heidelberg University. The Pioneers, who fell to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in the OAC, committed a season-high 31 turnovers against the Student Princes, who improved to 2-5, 2-1 in league play. [Box Score]
Freshman post Aleisha Guiler (Lower Salem, Monroe Central) continued to dominate the hardwood as she finished with a game-best 23 points and 14 rebounds, good for her 4th double-double of the season. Senior wing Whitney Swain (Belpre, Warren Local) added 14 points and sophomore guard Rachel Jones (Dublin, Coffman) contributed 9 points in the loss.
Heidelberg had four players reach double figures and as keyed by Jenny Miller with 18 points and 8 rebounds as well as Stacey Barker with 16 points. Betsy Shrider and Lyndsey DaVault added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The game remained tight throughout the first half with Heidelberg taking a 42-33 lead into intermission. A three-point basket by freshman Heather Blair (Upper Arlington, Newark Catholic)to start the second period cut the Pioneers' deficit to six points, 42-35. Marietta would not get any closer, however, the rest of way.
Marietta out shot Heidelberg 41.2% (21-of-51) to 39.7% (27-of-68) from the field and connected on 27-of-31 from the line. The Pioneers also out rebounded the Student Princes 42-34 but could not overcome its turnover troubles.
Marietta is back in action on Saturday (Dec. 19) when it takes on host Transylvania at 6 p.m.
