Men's Soccer falls to Ohio Northern 2-1 on Senior Day

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's soccer team finished its regular season with a 2-1 loss to #25 Ohio Northern University Saturday (Oct. 31) afternoon at Marietta Field. The Pioneers fell to 6-12-1 overall and 4-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). The Polar Bears improved to 14-3-2 overall and 8-0-1 in the OAC. The Polar Bears will be the top seed in next week's OAC Tournament, while Pioneers will be either the fourth or fifth seed. [Box Score]

Marietta will have to wait to see whether or not it will be hosting a first round tournament game or hitting the road on Tuesday (Nov. 3). If Heidelberg defeats Mount Union College then the Pioneers will travel to Tiffin as the fifth seed. If the Student Princes lose or tie, then the Pioneers will host either Heidelberg, Otterbein or John Carroll.

Ohio Northern opened the scoring in the 25th minute when Christian Huelsman finished a ball toward the near post after the Pioneer goalkeeper missed played a pass back. Greg Stawicki intercepted the ball and found Huelsman on the back side who calmly finished the goal putting the Polar Bears up 1-0.

The Polar Bears added a goal in the 30th minute to go up 2-0. A Huelsman corner found an unmarked Chaz McCullah on the back post. McCullah headed the ball home for the two-goal lead.

Marietta got on the board late in the second half with a goal in the 84th minute when sophomore Trenton Tunnell (Parkersburg, W.Va., South) took a shot from 30 yards out that scooted through the penalty box and underneath the Ohio Northern goalkeeper. The Pioneers were unable to find the equalizer down the stretch and fell 2-1.

The Polar Bears out shot the Pioneers 17-13 overall and 10-4 in shots on goal. Sophomore Andrew Shannon (Cincinnati, Mariemont) made eight saves for the Pioneers while his counterpart Mac Chruch made three.
