Volleyball falls in 5 sets to visiting John Carroll

MARIETTA, Ohio — Visiting John Carroll University fought back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Marietta College volleyball 3-2 (22-25, 24-26, 25-13, 25-20, 15-13) Friday (Oct. 30) on Senior Night at Ban Johnson Arena. [Box Score]

With the loss, the Pioneers fell to 18-11 overall and 4-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Blue Streaks improved to 12-16 but also 4-5 in league play. Both teams will have to wait on the outcome of Saturday (Oct. 31) afternoon's OAC action to see what seeds they will receive in next week's OAC Tournament, which begins on Tuesday (Nov. 3).

Marietta, playing without two regular starters, was carried offensively by freshman outside hitter Amanda Sawicki (Mentor, Lake Catholic), who finished with a school-record 32 kills on 75 attempts, which is also a school record.

Sophomore outside hitter Alex Weissling (Dublin, Dublin Scioto) added 13 kills, while freshman middle blocker Alexa Baudo (Mentor, Mayfield) had 7. Freshman setter Ally Jenkins (Twinsburg, Walsh Jesuit) finished with 49 assists, while senior defensive specialist Katy Williams (Richmond, Ind., Richmond) had 4 service aces in the loss.

Four Pioneers finished with double-digit dig performances. Senior libero Becca Holzworth (North Olmsted, North Olmsted), who increased her career total to 1,793, and Sawicki both collected a team-high 18 digs. Jenkins contributed 14 digs, while Williams finished with 12 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Jessie Blackley (Aurora, Aurora) also pitched in with a pair of block assists in the match.
