Volleyball takes care of Wilmington in 4 sets

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College volleyball team moved back to .500 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) with a 3-1 (25-20, 25-17, 23-25, 25-15) victory over visiting Wilmington College Tuesday (Oct. 27) night at Ban Johnson Arena. [Box Score]

With the win, the Pioneers improved to 18-10 overall and 4-4 in the OAC. Marietta, who has already locked up a berth into next week's OAC Tournament, currently sit in fifth place with one match remaining on its slate. The Quakers fell to 1-17, 0-8 in the OAC.

Marietta sophomore outside hitter Alex Weissling (Dublin, Dublin Scioto) set a school record by hitting 70.6% in the match. She produced 12 kills without an error in 17 attempts over three sets. It is the highest hitting percentage for a Pioneer attacker that has taken between 15-19 swings in a match.

Freshman outside hitter Amanda Sawicki (Mentor, Lake Catholic) collected her fifth straight and 14th overall double-digit-kill performance, finishing with a match-high 18 kills. Sophomore middle blocker Jessie Blackley (Aurora, Aurora) matched Weissling and Sawicki in double figures by finishing off 10 kills. Freshman setter Ally Jenkins (Twinsburg, Walsh Jesuit) dished out a career-high 54 assists, while senior defensive specialist Katy Williams (Richmond, Ind., Richmond) added 3 service aces in the victory.

Senior libero Becca Holzworth (North Olmsted, North Olmsted) had a match-high 20 digs to increase her career total to 1,775, which is just 49 digs shy of 10th place on the OAC's all-time list. Freshman outside hitter Jen Braun (Chagrin Falls, Kenston) also pitched in with 10 digs, while Williams and Sawicki both added 8 digs on the night.

Marietta's front line finished with 9 total blocks and increased its season total to 312 block assists, which set a new single-season school record. Blackley led the play at the net with 5 block assists, while Jenkins added 3 and both Weissling and freshman middle blocker had 2.

The Pioneers close out their OAC schedule on Friday (Oct. 30) night when John Carroll University visits Ban Johnson Arena for a match-up at 7 p.m. Before the match, Marietta will honor Holzworth and Williams on Senior Night.
