Volleyball splits matches at Washington & Lee tri-match

LEXINGTON, Va. — The Marietta College volleyball team stepped away from its Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) schedule to play a pair of non-league matches Saturday (Oct. 24) afternoon on the campus of Washington & Lee University. The Pioneers began the tri-match with a 3-1 (25-23, 25-16, 28-30, 25-21) loss to the host Generals but bounced back to defeat Bridgewater (Va.) College 3-1 (18-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-16) to improve to 17-10 on the season. [W&L Box Score] [Bridgewater Box Score]

Marietta sophomore outside hitter Amanda Sawicki (Mentor, Lake Catholic) paced the offensive attack with 12 kills, while freshman setter Ally Jenkins (Twinsburg, Walsh Jesuit) had 31 assists against Washington & Lee. The offense was also aided by 9 service aces as four Pioneers had a pair in the loss.

Marietta senior libero Becca Holzworth (North Olmsted, North Olmsted) collected 19 digs to lead the defense. Sophomore Alex Weissling (Dublin, Dublin Scioto) added 9 digs, while freshman middle blocker Sarah Campbell (Twinsburg, Twinsburg) had 1 solo block and 3 block assists in the match.

Sophomore middle blocker Jessie Blackley (Aurora, Aurora) finished with a team-best 13 kills against Bridgewater. Sawicki also collected 10 kills and freshman outside hitetr Jen Braun (Chagrin Falls, Kenston) had 9 kills, while Jenkins finished with 36 assists in the victory, which helped the Pioneer eclipse their win total of 16 from a year ago.

Four Marietta defenders had double-digit dig performances against the Eagles. Holzworth led the way with 22 digs, senior defensive specialist Katy Williams (Richmond, Ind., Richmond) had 15 digs, Braun had 14 digs and Sawicki added 10 digs. Blackley also pitched in with a pair of solo blocks and two more block assists.

Marietta now turns its attention back to the OAC. The Pioneers will play host to Wilmington College on Tuesday (Oct. 27) night at 7 p.m. Marietta will then close out its regular season slate with a home match against John Carroll University on Friday (Oct. 30) night at 7 p.m. Live statistics of both matches will be available at http://www.marietta.edu/athletics/livestats/xlive.htm.
