MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's soccer team fell behind early to visiting Wilmington College Tuesday (Oct. 20) afternoon and could never fully regroup as the Quakers pulled out the 2-1 Ohio Athletic Conference victory at Marietta Field. [Box Score]

Wilmington (5-10, 2-4 OAC) wasted no time jumping on top against Marietta (5-10-1, 3-3 OAC), as the Quakers scored a goal in the 4th minute. Nick Kinder set up the score with a pass to teammate Cayleb Paulino, who struck a shot over the Pioneer keeper that bounced off the crossbar and into the back of the net.

Wilmington added to it lead in the 8th minute when a Marietta turnover gave the Quakers numbers going toward the goal. Darin Hinkle sent a cross through the box to teammate Anthony Montgomery, who calmly hit a ground shot into the goal to give his squad a 2-0 advantage.

Marietta cut into its deficit in the 48th minute when a Wilmington foul gave the Pioneers a free kick 25-yards out. Senior Deric McDonald (Vienna, W.Va., Parkersburg) bent the shot over the Quaker keeper's head and into the back of the net for his second goal of the season.

The Pioneers had their chances down the stretch but could not put the equalizer away and fell 2-1.

Wilmington out shot Marietta 17-10 overall and 10-6 in shots on goal.

Sophomore Andrew Shannon (Cincinnati, Mariemont) made 8 saves in the loss. A pair of Wilmington keepers had 2 saves each in the win.

Marietta is back in action on Saturday (Oct. 24) afternoon when Baldwin-Wallace College visits Marietta Field for an OAC match-up at 1 p.m.
