Marietta men fall 3-0 to visiting Capital

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College men's soccer team saw its three game Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) win streak snapped by visiting Capital University in a 3-0 decision Saturday (Oct. 17) afternoon during Homecoming action at Marietta Field. The loss dropped the Pioneers to 5-9-1 overall and 3-2 in the OAC. Capital improved to 12-4 overall and 4-1 in the OAC. [Box Score]

The Crusaders opened the scoring on a penalty kick in the 34th minute from midfielder Daniel McCarthy. The penalty kick was called after a Pioneer was whistled for a handball in the box, which instituted a red card. The Pioneers, playing with 10 men, were able to withstand the Crusaders attempts in the first half and went into halftime trailing only 1-0.

Capital's Ian Warmbrodt finished a rebound from a Steven McCarthy shot which caromed of the post in the 55th minute making the score 2-0. McCarthy capped off the scoring in the 77th minute after he beat a Pioneer defender then the keeper and tucked the ball and game away. McCarthy's goal was his 64th career goal and made him the Conference's all time scoring leader.

Sophomore Andrew Shannon (Cincinnati, Mariemont) finished with six saves while Capital's Justin Baltman and Darren Scarberry combined for one save and the Crusader shutout. Capital out shot Marietta 19-6 overall and 9-1 in shots on goal.

The Pioneers are back in action Tuesday (Oct. 20) afternoon at Marietta Field against Wilmington College. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
