Women's soccer routes Muskingum 4-1 for first OAC victory of the season

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's soccer team rattled off a season-high 36 shots en route to its 4-1 victory over visiting Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) rival Muskingum University Tuesday (Oct. 13) afternoon at Marietta Field. The victory improved the Pioneers' record to 1-3 in the OAC and 4-7-1 overall. The Fighting Muskies fell to 4-10, 0-4 in the OAC. [Box Score]

Marietta quickly jumped out to a 1-0 with a goal in the 9th minute. Sophomore forward Christina Tirpak (Galena, Olentangy) took a shot that was blocked by the keeper but bounced to the foot of senior forward Christi Tims (Olmsted Township, Olmsted Falls), who drilled a shot into the back of the net for her second goal of the season.

The Pioneers' advantage grew to 2-0 in the 13th minute. Sophomore midfielder Cara Nuss (Dayton, Carroll) picked up the assist when her corner kick into box found classmate defender Corryn Muench (Cold Spring, Ky., Newport Central Catholic), who headed the ball past the Muskie keeper and into the goal. It was Muench's second goal of the year.

Muskingum scored its first goal of the game in the 49th minute when Meghan Carlisle beat Marietta's keeper with a shot inside the far post for her third goal of the season.

The Pioneers answered to go back up two goals in the 62nd minute. Sophomore defender Jennifer Wilder (Ashland, Ashland) received the ball in transition and sent a thru ball to Tirpak racing into the box. Tirpak beat the keeper with a shot inside the near post for her first goal of the season.

Marietta capped the scoring in the 90th minute when sophomore midfielder Tessa Harlow (Whitehouse, Anthony Wayne) sent a corner kick into the box and Nuss headed the ball inside the far post for her fourth score of the year.

The Pioneers out shot the Fighting Muskies 36-9 and held a 16-4 advantage in shots on goal. Marietta senior goalkeeper Jenna Freeman (Bay Village, Bay) finished with 3 saves, while Muskingum keeper Andrea Larkin had 12 saves in 81 minutes.

Marietta is back in action on Saturday (Oct. 17) afternoon when the Pioneers playu host to Capital University in a men's and women's doubleheader at Marietta Field. The women's game is slated for 1 p.m. and the men's game will begin at 3 p.m.
