COLUMBUS, Ohio — Marietta's Mike Brandts went 3-for-4 with three RBI as the Pioneers showcased their resilience in the opening game of the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional, coming from behind to defeat Ohio Wesleyan 9-7 on Wednesday, May 21, at Ohio State University.
Trailing 5-1 midway through the game, Marietta's offense ignited for eight runs over the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to secure the victory. Drew Witouski also played a crucial role in the comeback, finishing 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI.
Roger Thompson contributed to the offensive outburst with two hits and two RBI, while Kirk Atha and John Sudges each collected two hits for the Pioneers (40-11-2).
On the mound, Jim Katschke (12-4) went the distance for Marietta, striking out five while allowing nine hits and only two earned runs. Katschke's gutsy performance kept the Pioneers in the game long enough for their bats to come alive.
