Marietta dominates Bethany in non-conference sweep

MARIETTA — Marietta College continued its impressive run, sweeping a non-conference doubleheader against Bethany (W.Va.) on Thursday, April 10, at Pioneer Park. The Pioneers took the opener 7-3 before unleashing an offensive onslaught in a 21-3 rout in the nightcap, improving their record to an outstanding 23-5-2 on the season.
 
In the first game, Mike Brandts led the charge for Marietta with a powerful display at the plate, belting two home runs and driving in three runs. Eric Shoup also flexed his muscles with a homer and two RBI, while Sean Risley went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
 
On the mound, Jim Katschke improved to 6-2 on the season with a dominant start, striking out four and not allowing a hit over the first two innings. The Pioneers showcased their pitching depth as Mike Kramer, Steve Oberhelman, and Steve Gerkin also saw action on the hill.
 
The Pioneers' bats exploded in the second game, as Marietta pounded out 20 hits en route to a 21-3 victory. Bob Beamer had a perfect day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored, a triple, and an RBI. Brandts and Darrin Spitzer each contributed home runs to the offensive barrage.
 
Shoup not only contributed at the plate but also on the mound, improving his record to 1-1 on the season by throwing two perfect innings of relief.
 
For Bethany (0-8), Bob Bloder went 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBI in the losing effort.
