ADA — Marietta's Jon Shuler, Jim Pancher and Mark Talarico each had three hits as the Pioneers defeated Wooster 13-6 in the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional at Ohio University on Friday, May 22.
With the win, the Pioneers advance to play York (Pa.) in a rematch from the tournament's first day. The Scots are eliminated from the postseason.
After three scoreless innings to open the game, Marietta scored four in the fourth and two in the fifth to take a 6-1 lead.
However, Wooster tied the game in the sixth with five runs on four hits. The first seven batters reached base on either a single or walk. Bob Schmuck, who went 2-for-5, singled to right to plate two runs in the inning.
The Pioneers responded five runs on five hits in the top of the seventh. Mark Talarico, who went 3-for-5 with six RBI, belted a two-out double to center that scored Tom Mohl and Jim Pancher. John Schaly and Jon Shuler also doubled in the inning.
Pancher and Shuler each went 3-for-5 with one RBI, while Dan Munday, Mohl and Schaly each had two hits.
Marietta starter Dave Stovall left the game during the fifth-inning rally and was replaced by Steve Riley, who struck out seven over the final four innings to improve to 6-0.
