MARIETTA — With its 12-6 victory over Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Saturday, May 30, Marietta College baseball is one victory away from securing an elusive NCAA Division III National Championship.
Tom Mohl and Jon Shuler provided the bulk of the offense as they each had three hits. Mohl had two doubles and a triple that resulted in three RBI, while Shuler had a triple, solo home run and two RBI.
Marietta had a 6-1 lead going into the bottom of the fifth, and that's when Oshkosh (31-3) got its offense going — sort of. The Titans scored two runs on no hits off MC pitcher Dave Stovall. Jeff Coenen and Gary Varsho led off the inning with walks, and both eventually scored.
The Titans tied the game a 6-6 in the bottom of the sixth with three runs off Marietta reliever Jerry Bishop. Jim Dorlack led off the inning with a home run to left. Blaine Kreutz followed with a double to right-center, scoring on Coenen's sacrifice fly to center.
With two outs, Varsho singled and eventually scored on Tom Lechnir's single to center.
However, the Pioneers responded with a run in the seventh and five more in the eighth. Shuler hit his solo homer in the seventh for the lone run.
In the eighth, Marietta had four hits, including a two-run double from John Schaly. He went 2-for-4.
Lisko scored the first run of the inning after walking and scoring on Mohl's triple. Mohl scored on Steve Morman's single. Also scoring in the inning was Jim Pancher, Morman and Schaly.
Steve Riley allowed two hits and struck out one over the final 3 1/3 innings to improve to 7-0. Joe Van Alstine took the loss after giving up six runs over six innings.
