A 1946 graduate of Glenville State in West Virginia, where he had an outstanding career in football and basketball, Bill joined the coaching staff at Marietta College in 1947. In his 40 years here he served as athletic director (1959-1969), basketball coach (1964-1978). In his early years he was also an assistant football coach. The high point of his coaching career came in the mid- 1950s with his fabulous Ohio Athletic conference championship basketball teams- the famous "Firehouse Five." Those quintets of 1953-1954 and 1954-1955 were 11-0 in the OAC each year and 21-1 and 21-4 overall. Bill was honored for his achievement by being voted Ohio College Basketball Coach of the Year in 1954.

He has been active in community affairs for many years—Kiwanis, VFW, Shriners and Boy Scouts. Kiwanis once honored Bill by naming him "Kiwanian of the year." Marietta College recognized his many contributions by presenting him with his Outstanding Alumnus Award in 1986.
