Wilbur White, '14 Wilbur "Mack" White well-exemplified the all-arund student-athlete of pre-World War I days. An outstanding athlete, he lettered in four different sports and was very active in extra curricular affairs. He earned four letters in football, three in baseball, and one each in basketball and track. He captained the baseball team in 1912 and the football team in 1913. Marietta College was not affiliated with an athletic association in those years so 'league" honors were denied "Mack." Following graduation, he coached the College baseball team in 1915. In 1922 and 1923 he played end for the Toledo Maroons of the National Football League.
Pro football was just a sideline, however, for from 1919-1925, "Mack" was a reporter for the Toledo Times. He served as managing editor of the paper from 1925-1930. This was followed by a stint in the U.S. House of Representatives, 1931-1933, after which he assumed the post of executive director of the Safety Glass Association. He retired from the position in 1955 and died in 1975.
