Samuel W. Hirt, a 1962 MC graduate and a four year letterman in basketball, his athletic achievements include his being names Little All-American in 1962. Selected Marietta's Most Valuable Player as a junior and following his senior season, Sam started every game from 1958-1962 and averaged 16.4 points per game. He finished his MC career with 1,234 points-fifth best on the Pioneer's All-Time Scoring List.

After graduating from MC, he obtained his master's degree and Ed. S. degree from George Peabody College in Nashville Tennessee. Since 1963, Sam has held a number of positions in the athletic department at Vanderbilt University including his being named their first full-time Instructor and Intramural Director; Director of Physical Education, Club Sports and Intramurals.

Currently, Sam is the Director of Campus Recreation at Vandy and he and his wife, Melanie, reside in Nashville. They have three children: Betsy, Shawn and Brett.
