Russ Polunus, '33. Russell :Goose" Polonus, a native of Sharon, Pennsylvania, where he was all-state in basketball in 1928, excelled in basketball and baseball during his four years and Marietta College. In basketball he won three letters, captained the team in 1933 and was acclaimed by one admirer as "the greatest basketball player Marietta College has since Don Whiting…in 1917." He lettered twice as first baseman on the baseball team. In addition, while on campus, he was president of the student body and business manager f the yearbook.
Recruited by former Marietta president W. Bay Irvine, then vice-principal of Sharon High School, Russ in turn recruited scores of later Sharonites for Marietta College, including four-fifths of Bill Whetsell's 1948 starting basketball team. He was a physical training instructor for the Navy in World War II and spent many years as an executive with Westinghouse Electric. Still active, he is purchasing agent for Consolidated Controls Corporation in California. He was inducted into the Mercer (Pa.) County Hall of Fame in 1985.
