Robert F. Wolfarth, despite having graduated nearly 20 years ago, is still a very visible part of Marietta College's athletic history- principally in the football record book.
An outstanding performer in football and baseball, Wolfarth earned four letters in each sport before graduating in 1965.
As a catcher and outfielder he gained recognition nationally. His senior year he finished fourth in the nation in stolen bases per game, and his 32 steals in 26 games set a Pioneer and Ohio Athletic Conference record at the time, as did his six thefts in a single game. He was captain of the 1965 team that went 21-4 , and after graduation he was drafted by the Detroit Tigers.
On the gridiron Wolfarth was a pass-catching phenomenon. His 119 career receptions and 1,607 career years receiving still stand as Pioneer records, and were conference marks at the time.
He was a two-time All-OAC team selection (1963 and 1964) and had the finest receiving year as a junior, pulling in 45 passes to tie for the OAC title in that category. He had won the title outright in his sophomore campaign.
Wolfarth's prowess in two sports earned him the college's Way-Weigelt Award his senior year as the school's outstanding athlete.
Following graduation Wolfarth coached high school football and was a teacher. He now lives in Hopewell, N.J., and operates his own construction company.
