Matthew DeSalvo, a four-year letter winner in baseball, pitched for the Etta Express from 1999-2003. He joins fellow teammates David Bradley ’99, Jay Coakley ’02 and Josh Streit ’99 in the Hall of Fame. During his career at Marietta, the Pioneers captured four Ohio Athletic Conference championships, made four trips to the NCAA Mideast Regional winning three times, and placed fifth in the Division III World Series in 1999 and were national runners-up in 2001 and 2002.  While an injury caused DeSalvo to miss most of the 2002 season, he was the most dominant pitcher in college baseball for three seasons (2000, 2001 and 2003). He was named first team All-OAC, All-Mideast Region and All-American in each of those three years. DeSalvo was also named the OAC Kent Tekulve Pitcher of the Year (2000, 2001 and 2003), the Division III National Player of the Year (2001) and the Division III National Pitcher of the Year (2003). He currently holds the NCAA All-Division records for career strikeouts (603) and career wins (53). He also holds the Division III record for strikeouts in a season (205).

DeSalvo, who graduated with a degree in Environmental Science, played 11 seasons of professional baseball including stints with the New York Yankees and Atlanta Braves as well as with teams in Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Taiwan. DeSalvo made his major league debut on May 7, 2007 with the New York Yankees and earned his first major league win against the Seattle Mariners on May 13, 2007.
