Karl Hiebel (pronounced Hee-bl), '35. Having completed fine athletic career at Marietta High School, Karl entered Marietta College in 1931 and continued to distinguish himself in sports. He missed a year of participation in football because of injury, but lettered on the gridiron in both his junior and senior years. He played centerfield on the baseball team, lettering three times and meriting inclusion on Don Drumm's list of "greatest baseball players." He coached briefly at the college after graduation and played several years of semi-pro baseball.

Karl found his professional niche as a science teacher and coach at Marietta High School from 1943 until his retirement in 1947. He officiated high school football, basketball, baseball and track competition in Ohio and West Virginia for almost half a century. He has been involved in service, education and senior citizens organizations for many years.
