Stafford was a three-time letterwinner in basketball and track & field for the Pioneers. A co-captain of the basketball team as a junior and senior, Stafford finished second in the OAC in rebounding in 1981-82, averaging 8.4 boards per game.
A tremendous leaper, Stafford also succeeded on the track, winning three varsity letters, while at Marietta. Stafford was the OAC high jump champion all three season he competed. He set the school record as sophomore in 1981 with a jump of seven feet that still stands as the OAC record today.
Stafford was a three-time NCAA Championships qualifier and a two-time All-American in the high jump. He broke his leg at the national meet his junior season and never competed again. The injury also impacted his senior season in basketball, as he only played in five games in 1983.
Stafford, the 1982 Homecoming King, was a member of the Hall of Fame committee for several years after graduation, serving as chairman for two years. Stafford also served on the World Series Committee, when MC hosted the tournament. He is also a member of the College’s Athletics Founders Board.
The native of Marietta, currently lives in Hartselle, Ala., and works as a general manager of the Baker Division of Sonoco Products Co. He and his wife, the former Pamela Lane ‘90, have one son, Grant (8).
