Malone was a four-year letter winner and a member of the first men’s soccer championship team at Marietta College. Over his four years the Pioneers compiled a record of 36-22-3 (.615) and captured the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) championship in 1984, while also placing second in the OAC in 1983.
For his outstanding play, Malone received several post season awards. He earned All-Mideast Region honors in 1984 and was selected All-Ohio in 1984 and 1985. He was also a three-time First Team All-OAC selection in 1983, 1984 and 1985. Malone’s teammates and coaches also selected him as the team’s Most Valuable Player in 1983, 1984 and 1985.
Although several years have passed, Malone still ranks as one of the best, if not the best, men’s soccer player in Marietta College history. In 1983 he led the conference with 18 goals, while also tallying nine assists. He holds the MC individual game records for goals and assists with four goals versus WVU Tech in 1983. Malone also holds the individual single season and career records for goals, assists and points. He finished his career with 55 goals, 32 assists and 142 points.
Malone, who now resides in Columbia, Md., is a sales manager for Beckman Coulter, a medical diagnostics company. He has two sons, Patrick and Andrew.
