Byer, a 1966 graduate, was the Way-Weigelt Award winner his senior year at MC. He led the Pioneers to Dad Vail Championships in 1963 and 1966. A captain his senior year, Byer and the varsity heavyweight crew were undefeated in 1966, sweeping the Dad Vail. Byer earned four varsity letters in crew at Marietta. He was named Mercer County (New Jersey) Outstanding Athlete for the decade of the sixties.
Since graduating from MC, Byer has excelled on the golf course, earning several honors and qualifying for the U.S Open. Byer is a five-time Mercer County Amateur Golf Championship and finished runner-up in the 1970 New Jersey State Golf Amateur Championship.
Byer and his wife Susan reside in Princeton, New Jersey. They had one daughter, Stephanie.
