Gregory Mitchell, a four-year letter winner, was a member of the track & field team from 1964-67. He earned All-American honors in 1967 after placing third in the discus throw at the NCAA Championship. Mitchell was a two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference performer winning the conference discus championship in 1965 and 1967. He placed fourth at the OAC meet in 1966. Mitchell set the Marietta College record in 1967 with a throw of 160-feet and 11 inches. His record stood for 45 years until Gaston Hayes ‘13 eclipsed the mark in 2012. Mitchell capped his career at Marietta with one of the greatest seasons in school history. His senior year he was undefeated during the regular season, set the school record, won the OAC and Mideast Regional Championships and placed third at the NCAA Championship. In his career, Mitchell competed against some of the greatest discus throwers of all time including four-time Olympic Gold Medalist Al Oerter.
Mitchell earned a degree in Physical Education and taught in the Toledo Public School System for 33 years retiring in 2010. After graduating from Marietta, he spent eight years as an assistant track coach at the University of Toledo where he worked with athletes in all of the field events. Mitchell became a licensed physical therapy assistant and served as a member of the Physical Therapy Assistants Governing Board from 1990-95. Mitchell currently lives in Toledo, Ohio, with his wife Sherry. They have one adult son, Ian.
