Hoyt (deceased), a 1936 graduate of Marietta College, earned three varsity letters in tennis during his years at MC. Hoyt won the Ohio Conference tennis championship in 1935 and 1936. Named captain of the team his junior and senior seasons, Hoyt led MC to the team championship of the All-Ohio Collegiate Tennis Tournament in both 1935 and 1936. Hoyt was inducted into Marietta College’s chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.
A Jacksonville, Florida, native, Hoyt enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and served 18 months in Panama as a personnel officer before earning the rank of Lieutenant Commander and moving to Atlanta, Georgia. After leaving the service, Hoyt worked in the furniture business in North Carolina and Florida. In 1955, Hoyt attended the seminary and was ordained as an Episcopal deacon in 1962 and a priest in 1963. Hoyt worked at an inner city mission giving out food and clothing to more than 10,000 people a year.
Hoyt is survived by his wife Mary Wigginton Hoyt, ’35, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, who will accept the award.
