Frank Louis "Duke" Hayes, a 1919 graduate, earned eight letters at Marietta College from 1915-18 in football and basketball. He later returned to his alma mater for a coaching career that included two years as basketball coach, 14 years as head football coach and a number of years as Marietta College athletic director. Hayes rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel on the Army Air Force and was prime mover in construction of Municipal Stadium (later renames Don Drumm Field) in Marietta in the 1930's. He died in 1967.
